Title

MS 1044, Genesis 25:1 to 28:15

Description

MS1044 is written in a beautiful Italian hand. It consists of two partial sheets of parchment containing a total of 5 columns of text. The text is formatted to contain 42 lines per column. The manuscript’s layout follows the more modern tradition of beginning each column with a letter VAV.
The scribe followed a unique tradition in beginning the “closed paragraphs” (PARASHIYOT SETUMOT) in the middle of the third column, Genesis 26:34 and 27:1.
The Italian hand borrowed heavily from the Spanish School. Some marked characteristics include the tall curved tops of the letter LAMED, the employment of the CHET of Rashi, the TZADEs with bent down outward facing YODS, and PEHs with outward leaning noses. The parchment has dried and the original black ink is scaling and peeling off.
