Description
MS1008 originates from Tunisia. The three-columned panel was removed from a larger Torah scroll. The parchment shows wear and tear on both top and bottom margins. Likewise, it exhibits noticeable folds partially obscuring the text. The parchment is dry and the ink exhibits signs of flaking and peeling.
The writ is representative of the older calligraphy of scribes of the Maghreb. Among the salient characteristics are stretched out Shins, the use of the Chet of Rashi, short Lameds without a head on the ascenders, square letter Bets without the modern hoof on their back, and Gimmels with a straight joined foot at the bottom. The scroll is written in a format of 42 lines per column with each column commencing with a letter "VAV.” The above aids us in dating this scroll to be around 200 years old.
