MS 1046, Exodus 19:3 to 22:4

This Torah fragment originates from the same Torah Scroll as fragment 1045. Written on Klaf, the section covers the narrative of the giving of the Ten Commandments. The piece measures 18 x 21 inches and consists of three columns of written text. Each column is formatted to contain 48 lines of text. The parchment is thin and tender in some sections. Likewise, the ink, although jet black, is powdering and flaking off.
This scroll came to Israel some 50 years ago from Riga, Latvia. The text is written in an Ashkenazi hand, which is a cross between Ketav Bet Yosef and Arizal script. This type of writ was very common at the time. Salient characteristics include wide based Shins (similar to the Sephardic/Velish writ), Nuns with their descendants emanating from the right side of the head, AYINs with their left head shaped like a VAV. The letters CHET and TZADE are shaped in accordance to the guidelines set by the Bet Yosef.
