Title
MS 1027, Genesis 22:15 to 24:4
Description
MS1026 consists of one column of text which was removed from a larger Torah scroll. It is written in a "Ketav Arizal" and follows a format of 52 lines per column. Although this column of text begins with a letter “VAV,” we are not able to ascertain that this was true for all columns of the original Torah.
The scroll appears to come from one of the Baltic States bordering on Russia and not from Germany as identified by the original seller. Both the type of ink and writing style are consistent with this assertion.
The text reflects a classic Eastern European hand known as "Ketav Arizal." Some salient characteristics include letter CHETS written in a combination of "VAV" and "ZAYIN" connected by a pitched roof. Likewise, the left head of all “Sha'atnez Gez” letters are written in the form of a "Vav" instead of a "Zayin" as is the case with other Germanic texts. The left most teeth of the letter "Shins" join the letter at the top of the base. Likewise the "Vav" descendants of the letter "Ayin" join the body of the letter at approximately a forty-five degree angle.
