Title
MS 1039, Genesis 22:24 to 24:43
Description
MS1039 was removed from a larger Torah scroll. The section was very likely removed to repair the hole on the letter HEI on the word HaKena'ani. The above visible printed crowns are not original to the scroll. Torah law forbids the application of any other extraneous markings on the parchment besides the writ. Doing so invalidates the scroll for ritual use. The above observed stamping is sometimes applied to the scroll of Esther where the Jewish law permits the use of extraneous decorations.
This scroll fragment is written in a beautiful and stunning contemporary "Ketav Arizal." The scroll is not older than 80 to 90 years and was very likely produced in the land of Israel. The markings for making the guidelines and finishing of the parchment are typical of the more modern klaf production methods employed in Israel and were not practiced in Europe.
